4 Item(s) Page 1 of 1 | 1 Drs. Budge and Wooten showed that human beings use fully 85-90% of the Omega-3 fats required in the flax seed oil form! It is essential to "TAKE" as we cannot make LNA. We only convert 10-15% of the LNA into EPA (heart artery healthy fats) and DHA the brain, neurons, eyes, ears, and other exquisitely sensitive cells-fats form. There is no truth to any part of the statement that fish oil is "more active" or "more anti-inflammatory" than flax. Those are uneducated or marketing oriented statements. Each and every one of us simply needs to supplement both--in the amount required-or something will not work!

The other two forms of Omega fatty acids are called Omega-6 fats and Omega-9 fats. Omega-6 fats are in all of the plant food you eat and are already woefully excessive. Therefore, supplementing them is not a good choice. BUT you do need to eat the healthy ones from fruits, vegetables, berries, lentils, beans, very limited and only whole grains, and some raw, not roasted nuts. The omega-9 version is not essential at all, but is found in avocados, olives & the oil, and almonds. So we should never supplement with either the O-6's or the O-9's.

Flax seed oil contains 62% Alpha-Linolenic Acid (LNA or ALA). It is the mother (i.e. parent) or source Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) in the Omega-3 family. Fish living in very cold water transform LNA into the fish oils. Note, this means only from the far northern or far southern-and NOT from the Gulf of Mexico, waters around Florida, Southern Cal, or the warm waters in southeast Asia. These cold water fish convert the LNA into the fish oil forms known as EPA & DHA or fish oils in significantly higher amounts to keep their blood from freezing in the cold arctic and sub-arctic oceans.

A challenging and confusing issue with people is their misunderstanding of the manufacterer's marketing gimics and the store clerks lack of expertise and desire to sell the most profitable products. Therefore the retail buyer falls into the trap of believing that a “good” supplement company is an all around good choice and it doesn’t matter which label in their brand they pick. I hear this every day with my clients, so I know it is a naive and common issue. AND the oil companies and other supplement company’s play on your incorrect belief in that. So they make many different labels, some are less concentrated, some contain the bass-ass-backward choice from what you should be buying (I know, shame on them), some are more concentrated, others contain other added nutrients that should not be in the supplement at all, and others, add miniscule amounts of Omega-3 fats, from some unknown origin (by now rancid) so you believe you are getting enough of that fat.

So in purchasing nutritional oils, these are my best suggestions. As you will note in my work, I am extremely exact. So if you trust me, which you can, take these suggestions literally.

Purchase only the Barlean's(R) brand Highest Lignan(TM) flax and take at least 1 TBSP (10.05g) or 10 capsules daily. You will get the natural blend of Omega fats found in Flax seeds which is 62% LNA, 18% LA/GLA (Omega-6 fats), and 20% Omega-9 fats. This will help bring up your Omega-3 deficiency, and relatively reduce your Omega-6 overage, while you eat from your largely plant diet the other needed amounts of Omega-6’s & 9’s. But you will not need to supplement further in those categories.

If you eat hydrogenated fats, they are by definition terribly rancid, foreign to the body, and thus immune system triggering Omega-6 fats. They will destroy your cell's function, make you very sick, and then kill you. They specifically make your cells dysfunctional because of their chemistry, which “dumbs down” or retards the cell’s membrane. The membrane of your body’s cells—all ~75 trillion of them, is critical to your cell’s function, your immune protection, hormonal control/balance, and nerve transmissions. It would be hard to overstate the importance of having healthy, fully functional cell membranes. The Omega 3 fats join with the Omega-6 fats to make every cell membrane in your body called a phospholipid bi-layer. That is why the balance between them needs to be close to 1:1. But hydrogenated (partially or fully—no matter which) cause more diseases than you can name. They are deadly—literally.

Every supplement oil company makes them as Omega 3-6-9 supplements. They do it to sell more, get more shelf space so you recognize their brand and translate that in your mind into “Oh, they must be the best”. BUT YOU ONLY NEED TO TAKE BOTH ENOUGH of and THE PUREST FLAX OIL + FISH OIL.

About ground flax seeds-the question I always get. Flax seed meal from the store are flax seeds already ground and regardless of the brand, ARE ALREADY RANCID IN THE STORE. There is no way around that. I use freshly ground flax seeds daily in my smoothie to get the added nutrients from the seeds and the very significant fiber they contain. BUT--YOU WILL HAVE TO EAT 3 FULL TBSP DAILY, OF THE FRESHLY GROUND--BY YOU--FLAX SEEDS TO GET 10g OR 1 TBSP OF THE OIL REQUIRED. YOU WON’T DO THAT, SO BUY THE LIQUID AND USE IT RELIGIOUSLY DAILY. THEN WHEN YOU CAN AND IF YOU WILL, ADD THE FLAX SEEDS DAILY TO MY SMOOTHIE RECOMMENDATION FOR THE ADDED BENEFIT OF THE SIGNIFICANT NUTRIENTS & FIBER THEY PROVIDE.
